Coup de théâtre en 1990, Stig Anderson vend Polar Music et le catalogue ABBA à Polygram Records qui, à son tour passe aux mains de Universal Music. ABBA et sa musique n'auront jamais bénéficié d'autant de soin et de support qu'entre les mains d'Universal Music. Néanmoins, et malgré son regain de popularité, ABBA continue de prétendre que jamais le groupe ne se reformera.En février 1999, un consortium d'affaires offrit à ABBA la somme d'un milliard de dollars pour la reformation du groupe, la création d'un nouvel album original et une tournée de spectacles d'adieu à travers le monde, ce que les membres du groupe refusèrent. Il faudra attendre en février 2005 pour retrouver les quatre membres du groupe dans un seul et même endroit, soit lors de la première de la comédie musicale Mamma Mia! à Stockholm. Autre déception pour les fans en délire de cet événement, rien de cette soirée mémorable ne fut officiellement photographié.Néanmoins, fait remarquable pour un groupe inactif depuis plus de vingt ans, encore aujourd'hui, près de 2 millions d'albums ABBA se vendent chaque année de par le monde.
